The History of Voice over Internet Protocol By the end of 2006, Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) may account for as much as 25 – 40% of international voice traffic. This prediction is impressive, but it is even more amazing when you consider the relatively short history of voice over internet protocol. It began as a hobby for some people in Israel who were only able to communicate by computer.

Later that year, in 1995, the first company in the history of voice over internet protocol to put a product on the market was Vocaltec. They released Internet Phone Software, which in combination with a home computer, sound card, speakers, microphone and modem allowed users to make a phone call over the internet. However, the people on both ends had to have the same setup, and sound quality was much less than on a normal phone.

In 1998, there were more milestones in the history of voice over internet protocol. Entrepreneurs began to recognize the potential of the technology and soon computer-to-phone and phone-to-phone connections (still using a computer for the transmission) were possible for making voice calls over the internet. The service was available using a phone at a provider’s location in North America only.

It required the users to listen to an advertisement at the beginning and end of each phone call, but in exchange their long distance calls were free. In 1998, less than 1% of voice calls were made using voice over internet protocol.

Businesses began to use VOIP over their intranets to help communicate within their company. But with the introduction of switching equipment in 1998 by 3 manufacturing companies, the history of voice over internet protocol took a turn towards the future.

Now VOIP could become more readily available to users at home instead of at a specific facility belonging to the provider. By the year 2000, more than 3% of voice calls were made over the internet using VOIP.

Today, there are both hardware and software options for those interested in business VOIP and for their personal use. You can purchase hardware that will allow you to use your normal phone handset when making a phone call.

You can buy phones that are VOIP ready and need only an internet broadband connection. Or, you can purchase or download software that will let you use your computer instead of a phone, provided that you have speakers, a microphone, and an appropriate sound card.

Many phone companies have begun to offer packages that include local and long distance VOIP calls for a flat monthly fee. With the advent of broadband services, sound quality has become parallel to regular land line phones for the first time in the history of voice over internet protocol. And the number of people using VOIP is only expected to grow.

The UK is ill equipped to cater to the future requirements of broadband applications as compared to countries such as Romania, concluded a recent study to compare broadband capabilities in different nations of the world.

Technology provider Cisco Systemsby Oxford University’s Said Business School and Spain’s University of Oviedo’s Department of Applied Economics financed and conducted this study. The most shocking revelation is that the UK stands 25th amongst 66 countries studied for broadband preparedness.

The countries were further classified in four categories, viz. ‘Ready for tomorrow’, ‘Comfortable for today’, ‘Meeting needs for today’ and ‘Below needs for today’, and the UK was alarmingly slotted into ‘Meeting needs for today’ category.

The factors that were considered to slot countries into these ranks and categories were average download and upload speeds, extent of broadband coverage and broadband penetration. A country with fast, widespread broadband connection such as Japan scored highly, whereas a country with slow connection or with a majority of population deprived of internet scored lower.

Some other factors that were considered were the country’s preparedness to address the needs of future internet users who would demand facilities such as video and TV streaming. The study revealed that only nine countries were fit to accommodate future requirements. As an example, South Korea aiming for universal 1Gb broadband by 2012 scored highly as compared to the UK that is aiming only 2Mb by 2012.

The silver lining in all these estimates is that a considerable improvement in broadband preparedness as compared to last year has been registered, as more countries are now finding themselves in the ‘Ready for the future’ category. Moreover, as per Cisco, the present needs that matters the most, and so the UK is faring quite well.

The mobile telephone market is getting more and more difficult to understand everyday. New service providers, unbelievable cell phone device special deals, models and call and text plans have turned mobile research into a really boring and time draining activity. And in such a scenario, obtaining a new and improved eye-opening mobile device either requires tons of knowledge about different cellular phone special deals and sets, or absolute ignorance.

A partially knowledgeable mobile device consumer in the mobile market is as rare as a dodo. If you plan to buy a mobile telephone based on a spur of the moment decision, then we can only wish you all the best. On the other hand, if you are planning to undertake all forms of mobile telephone research activity before you shell out the pound, then the unbelievable advice given below will often help you in getting the best mobile special deal based on your needs. Hunt for the best Vodafone deals online with Mobileshop.

The majority of folk compare cellular phone offers based on a unilateral perspective. As a result, those people who pay attention to cell phone sets and features such as a camcorder repeatedly end up having plans that are unusually costly whilst those who compare mobile device plans diligently oftentimes end up with the wrong handset.

So that, it is crucial that you carry out mobile phone research activity at both the call and text plan and the handset model level. The 1st thing you need to do is decide upon all the superb functions and feautures such as mp3 players that you would like in your cellular phone. Based on this inventory of brilliant feautures such as mp3 players that you want, you may 1st select a good mobile that has everything that you need and falls within your budget. In fact, trimming down to 2 or 4 mind-blowing phone models may help you get a better calling plan. Hence, it is vital that you carry out cellular phone research on both the call and text plan and the mobile model level. The very first thing you need to do is decide upon all the excellent functions and features such as a camcorder that you would like in your mobile device. Based on this list of spectacular features such as an internet browser that you want, you could select a terrific mobile that has everything that you need and falls within your budgetary restraints.

Free sim cards may cost you more than a monthly contract!

Ok, so, if a sim card is free, it wont cost you anything right?

Wrong! A bar does not charge you to enter, but, by the time you leave your pockets will have emptied somewhat!

So it is with free sim card offers. The networks give you the free card to lure you toward their network. Once you start using your card you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. You may find that the credit you put onto the card decimated after just a few calls.

Instead of looking at free sims in terms of what you do get, consider what you do not get:

Free calls

A Free Handset

Unlimited Airtime (imagine you run out of credit in an emergency)

If you use your phone fairly frequently, it will not take much to put the cost of a handset using a free sim card above that of a phone on a monthly tariff. If you were to take out a 12 month contract on your phone, then, you will get a free handset, and usually some free minutes included each month.

So, a free sim card is usually more expensive than a contract phone where you pay line rental!

Using a free sim card is only appropriate if you have an old handset you would like to use as a spare, but do not intend to use very often.

Even then, as you do not plan to use the handset frequently you need to check whether your credit expires after a given time.
