How Much Will a Free Sim Card Cost You?
Ok, so, if a sim card is free, it wont cost you anything right?
Wrong! A bar does not charge you to enter, but, by the time you leave your pockets will have emptied somewhat!
So it is with free sim card offers. The networks give you the free card to lure you toward their network. Once you start using your card you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. You may find that the credit you put onto the card decimated after just a few calls.
Instead of looking at free sims in terms of what you do get, consider what you do not get:
- Free calls
- A Free Handset
- Unlimited Airtime (imagine you run out of credit in an emergency)
If you use your phone fairly frequently, it will not take much to put the cost of a handset using a free sim card above that of a phone on a monthly tariff. If you were to take out a 12 month contract on your phone, then, you will get a free handset, and usually some free minutes included each month.
So, a free sim card is usually more expensive than a contract phone where you pay line rental!
Using a free sim card is only appropriate if you have an old handset you would like to use as a spare, but do not intend to use very often.
Even then, as you do not plan to use the handset frequently you need to check whether your credit expires after a given time.
